The band comprises the standard big band line-up of 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones plus rhythm section and all the players are experienced musicians who have played in bands all over South East England. Some earn their living through music, either as performers, composers, arrangers, instrument repairers or educators while others are either semi-professional or play purely as a hobby. All of them are highly talented accomplished players.
In addition, we are blessed to have two fabulous vocalists in Stephen Dunnett and Suzanne Cornford. They both have many years experience performing with bands or as solo artists and are true entertainers who always get the audience involved and bring the show to life.
On 11th March 2017 we performed our latest show .......................... at .................................................... to raise funds for St Wilfrid's Hospice (Eastbourne).
The Sussex All Stars Big Band was formed in 2015 by Eastbourne based saxophonist Peter Blackmore for a private charity fund raising event. The 19 musicians and singers were selected from the many local bands that Peter has played in during more than 30 years of music making.
The performance for an invited audience of family and friends raised over £1200 for the local St Wilfrid's Hospice and the band sounded fantastic. Following great feedback from the audience and musicians it was decided that it would be a waste to do just the one gig.
A first public performance was given in 2016 and our 'Swing Time' shows are now established as annual fund-raisers for the hospice. Preparations are currently being made for Swing Time 2018.
So that is how the Sussex All-Stars Big Band was formed.
